ResumoA mobile LIDAR located at Alcantara-MA, Brazil (02 22S and 44 33W) was employed for cloud base determination and its thickness estimation, atmospheric boundary layer height by the detecting the backscattering signal of, tropospheric aerosols and cirrus clouds. The experiment was held at the Alcântara Launching Center (ALC), between March 1 and 25 , 2010 as part of the CHUVA project (Cloud processes of tHe main precipitation systems in Brazil: A contribUtion to cloud resolVing modeling and to the GPM). The GPM (Global Precipitation Measurements) is an international project led by NASA and JAXA mainly focused in two components: the ground validation and in the satellite constellation. The ground validation component intends to validate the precipitation estimation from the GPM constellation and develop new algorithms for improving the performance and precision of the remote precipitation estimation also aiming to extend the knowledge of the cloud processes to reduce uncertainty in the precipitation estimation, mainly from warm clouds helping to better understand the water and energy budget and the cloud microphysics. The LIDAR employed consisted of has a pulsed Nd:YAG laser emitting short pulses at 532 nm with maximum output energy at 532nm, , of 120 mJ. The receiving telescope of the LIDAR system is based on a Cassegrainian design. The optics set-up is such that the maximum overlap is reached at about 180 m above the LIDAR system and spatial resolution of 7.5 m. The LIDAR measurements were made during 10 days and the preliminary results point to low cloud base altitudes about 0.60-0.80 km, showing few meters of thickness (0.20 km). The aerosol loading was observed just close to the surface except in one case where an aerosol layer, at about 16 km, was observed probably due to the biomass burning aerosols coming from the inner part of the Maranhao State. The mixed layer was about 0.8 km, with oceanic characteristics. Cirrus clouds were observed in several days about 8 - 15 km with thickness reaching 4 km. These measurements are important to compare and validate datas of radiometers, radiossonde, VANT (Air Vehicle Unmanned) and aircraft measurements, all used in this project.
